Learn How to Harvest Cut Flowers at Little Lifestyle Flower Farm

Do you ever feel unsure about where to cut, or worry about taking long enough stems because there are other buds on it? Want to sell your own flowers? This hands-on experience is for you – the beginner, the home gardener or the aspiring flower grower. This workshop will give you the confidence and knowledge to harvest flowers like a pro, keeping your plants healthy and productive all season long.

In around 2.5 hours, you’ll learn:

  • The Right Cut: How and where to cut for strong regrowth (no more short stems!)

  • Plant Care: Why deadheading and de-budding are good for your plants, and how to do it without fear

  • When To Cut: How to tell if a flower is at its perfect picking stage, or past it

  • Field Walk & Demos: We’ll chat about harvesting on different varieties:

    • The “wiggle test” for zinnias

    • Spotting “blown centres” and when a dahlia is too late to pick

    • Cutting to encourage more blooms

Here’s how it works:

  1. Quick Start Demo: We’ll cover the basics of stem length, cutting angle, and tool use. All your questions answered upfront.

  2. Field Walk & Learn: We’ll tour the rows together. I’ll demonstrate on real plants, and you’ll see exactly what to look for.

  3. Your Harvest Challenge: You’ll get a fun “florist’s order” to fill. Grab your snips and bucket and head into the field to carefully select and cut around 35 stems of your choice (dahlias, zinnias, cosmos, scabiosa, feverfew, strawflowers, and more – whatever is in season in the field at the time of the workshop).

  4. Process & Prep: Bring your haul back to the benches. Learn how to properly strip stems, check for flaws, and get flowers ready for arrangement.

  5. Take Home Your Blooms: All the flowers you harvest are yours to keep! You’ll leave ready to create beautiful bouquets at home. If time allows, we start playing with arrangements right here in the field, otherwise you can take them home to make your own creations.

You leave with: The skills to harvest your own garden confidently, ~35 stems of gorgeous seasonal flowers, and the confidence to make them last.
